Tourism is a major source of income in Cyprus, despite the country’s political and economic challenges. Starting in the late 1970s and after a booming in early 1980s, a lot of people joined the industry having no idea about it.
Today, a big number of professionals are educated but an even bigger number are working only with basic knowledge. Managers had the luxury of choosing graduates from Hospitality schools in Cyprus every year, and not much effort needed to develop, since they were educated on the field.
Now the big challenge of last few years, is that the business volume in Cyprus has grown to such an extent that there are not enough professionals to cover the Industry needs. Non Cypriots are representing the 70% (!) of the hospitality workforce in the island. Properties are recruiting anyone asking for a job in Hospitality sector.
New generation managers as well as the progressives, are investing in staff training and developing with more confidence than before, and this is a real progress throughout the years.
Are training organizations investing in training programs for professionals, or developing their techniques and methods as per trends? Are they implementing modern and innovative methods or they are using the traditional path of “what was working for so many years is good”?
